Are inflatable tents worth it? What to check before you buy

It depends on who does the pitching. A poled tent needs a second pair of hands at one specific moment; an air frame does not, and that single mechanical difference explains the whole price gap. What the advertising leaves out is the rest of the job, which does not get faster. Here are the four things that decide it, including the one that turns a puncture into a lost weekend.

Australians took 17.3 million caravan and camping domestic overnight trips in the year to December 2025, up 14 per cent, spending $12.6 billion, according to Tourism Research Australia. That is the highest level on record, and a record year means a large group of people choosing a first family tent with nothing to compare it against. Air-beam tents rode that wave, and the reason is not mysterious: nobody has ever enjoyed threading pole number seven at nine at night in wind. Are inflatable tents worth it depends on four things, and none of the four appears in the advertising.

Why are inflatable tents suddenly everywhere in Australia?

Because demand rose and the format removes the one job people dread. Search interest in the term inflatable camping tent grew 23 per cent year on year to about 15,000 searches a month, per Glimpse's trend page, and that snapshot is dated March 2025, not this year, so treat it as evidence of a rising category and not as a current reading. The commercial answer follows the demand. An air tent replaces the part of pitching that needs a sequence, two people and daylight with a single job that needs a pump. It does not remove pegging, guying or levelling, which is where the honest reading of the category starts. The tent goes up faster. The campsite does not set itself up faster.

Are inflatable tents worth it compared with pole tents?

It comes down to who is doing the work, not to which frame is better. A poled tent wants a second pair of hands at one specific moment: the frame-up, when a long span has to be lifted and held while the other end is located. Miss that and the sequence stalls. An air frame has no equivalent moment, because the span rises from one inflation point and holds itself while you walk around it. That is the entire mechanical difference, and it explains the whole price gap. If you always pitch with another adult who helps, you are paying for an advantage you already have. If you are the one pitching while somebody else manages children, the dog and dinner, you are paying for the only thing that matters. Weight moves the other way: beams and their sleeves are heavier than aluminium poles of the same span, so an air tent packs bigger and heavier than its poled equivalent.

How fast can one person actually pitch one, alone?

Five minutes, one person, with our own electric pump, measured on the Often Marine, and four to seven across pitches depending on the pump and on how well you know the tent. Both of those are solo figures, which is the only comparison worth making: the frame that needs a second pair of hands is the one that fails on the night you arrive late. The pump is the variable nobody quotes, and the split that matters is manual against electric: a hand pump asks for the arms and the minutes, while a rechargeable electric one runs the beams up to pressure on its own while you peg out. Every pitch time you read anywhere is a time for that tent with that pump, which is why the figures never agree. Family air tents on the market run longer, with independent testing putting a complete solo pitch at roughly ten to twenty-three minutes. The gap between any of those figures and the seconds implied by a product video is the whole complaint about how this category is sold. A product video shows the inflation step, which is genuinely quick and genuinely the smallest part of the job. The rest of the job does not change with the frame: unpacking, laying the footprint out square, pegging the base before anything rises, inflating, then walking the guys and adjusting the tension. Only the fourth of those five steps is faster on an air tent. Plan your arrival around the whole sequence, not the clip, which in practice means reaching the site with real light left.

Do air beams hold up in Australian wind?

They do not last longer under load. They fail differently, and that is worth more than a wind rating. A pole under load bends until it reaches its limit and then snaps, and a snapped pole ends the trip because you cannot splint an aluminium section at a campsite in the dark. An inflated beam under the same load deforms, sheds the shape of the gust, and returns. Nothing breaks, because there is nothing rigid to break. What decides your night, though, is neither beam nor pole. It is the pegs. A tent of either kind that is not staked at every anchor point, with the guys draped instead of tensioned, becomes a sail long before the frame is the weak link. Treat any wind figure quoted on a product page as a laboratory number: it describes the structure under controlled load, not a tent on soft ground in a gusting crosswind with two pegs in loose sand.

Which makes the pegs the specification nobody reads, and in Australia they are the one thing that changes with the site, not with the tent. The thin wire pegs that ship in the bag hold in packed clay and pull straight out of coastal sand or the loose gravel of a river flat. Sand needs a wide, long peg that holds by surface area. Hard inland ground needs one you can drive without folding it. Carry both kinds and you have removed the most common cause of a tent moving overnight, on any frame. It is the cheapest upgrade in camping and the one that never appears in a comparison, because it belongs to the ground, and no product page owns the ground.

What do you check on the spec sheet before you buy?

Two numbers and one absence. The first number is the hydrostatic head, which measures the water pressure the fabric resists before it leaks. SectionHiker's reference puts 1,000 to 1,500 mm as suitable for light showers and not ideal for sustained wet weather, 2,000 to 3,000 mm as good for moderate rain and longer exposure, and 5,000 mm and above as excellent, suitable for heavy rain and standing water. Floors are normally rated higher than flies, because a floor takes the weight of a person pressing it into standing water: around 3,000 mm on the fly against 5,000 mm underfoot is the common combination on family air tents sold here. The second number is the floor denier, which describes yarn thickness: a heavier floor fabric resists the abrasion of gravel and the puncture of a stick you did not see. The absence is fire. There is no mandatory Australian flammability standard for camping tents, and a listing citing AS 5637 is quoting a building-lining standard rather than a tent one, so treat any fire-rating claim as something to verify with the maker directly.

What happens when a beam gets punctured?

You repair it, and you should know that before you need to. Repair kits and replacement beams are a standard part of this category rather than an exotic accessory, which is itself the honest signal: the makers expect punctures, and so should you. Individual replacement beams are commonly listed on the Australian market between about $110 and $200, so ask for that price and for availability before you buy: it is the number that turns a puncture into a delay instead of a lost weekend. Here is the real weakness of the format, and it is not the one usually raised. A poled tent fails partially and visibly: one pole goes, the rest holds, and you improvise with tape and a tent peg. A beam that loses pressure at two in the morning takes its whole section of roof down with it, in the rain, while you are inside. Carry the kit in the tent bag, not the shed. And handle the valve as the component it is: the single part that turns the entire structure back into a groundsheet.

Which tent should you buy for the way you actually camp?

Answer two questions and the choice makes itself. Do you pitch alone, and does your car reach the ground you camp on?
